Our Mission

As Executive Director of Matthew's Ministry, I am acutely aware of the problem of food insecurity among many children in Brunswick County. Recent statistics indicate that 26% of children suffer from food insecurity in Brunswick County. Matthew's Ministry works to eliminate weekend and non-school day hunger with a viable backpack program that provides weekend food to school children during the school year. They provide weekend food to over 550 children at 16 area schools. Funding is essential to ensure that food can continue to be purchased and delivered to children identified as food insecure. 

For the first ten years, we could buy food using our account through the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC. This system allowed us to purchase food in bulk at discount prices. However, in March 2020, this bulk pricing ended when COVID hit the nation. As a result, our food cost jumped from $5.55/ child/ week to $9.34/ child/ week. Community support through monetary donations is instrumental in ensuring we have the funds to continue providing food for the kids we serve.
